Killers of the Flower Moon has become a rare Martin Scorsese film as it reaches a major milestone at the box office.
Based on David Grann’s nonfiction novel of the same name, the film is set in 1920s Oklahoma and follows members of the Osage Nation who are murdered after oil is discovered on their land.
At the time of this writing, Killers of the Flower Moon has grossed $102 million worldwide. This makes it the ninth of Martin Scorsese’s 26 narrative films to surpass $100 million at the box office.
In addition to positive reviews, Killers of the Flower Moon has received excellent reviews and is a strong Oscar contender. However, the cost of the film is $200 million, which means that the film has a long way to go before it becomes profitable.
However, with the upcoming release of Marvel’s Captain Marvel 2, this means that the film will face enormous competition. This made it increasingly difficult for the film to recoup its costs.
Interestingly, Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon are both R-rated films with big directors, but the box office gap between the two films is huge. “Oppenheimer,” in addition to its excellent opening time, also lost the same day as “Barbie,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” did not have such an opportunity.
For now, Killers of the Flower Moon will struggle to turn a profit. Even though the film grossed more than $100 million worldwide, there were no actors to promote the film during the Hollywood actors’ strike. To some extent, this will affect the box office of the movie.
In any case, Killers of the Flower Moon was originally intended for streaming. So even the producers don’t care too much about the box office. Of course, the film will also be available for streaming after its theatrical release.
Now, changing movie-watching habits mean that by the time “Killers of the Flower Moon” is released on streaming, there is no guarantee that it will get more views and hits.
